QUICK GUIDE

Keep or Swap? Simple choices for a healthier home

Practical swaps, including plenty that cost very little.

Our Keep or Swap guide shows what we'd happily choose, what we'd simply replace with a better option when it wears out, and the few things we'd consider changing sooner.

The aim isn't to clear out perfectly usable things. It's to make sensible choices when something needs replacing — and to prioritise the few changes that may be worth making sooner.

Buying advice

  • Good choices to keep or buy: Wood, stainless steel, glass and ceramic can all be practical, durable choices. If what you already have is working well and in good condition, there's often no need to replace it.
  • Swap when it wears out: For things like plastic food containers, lunch boxes, kettles, colanders and washing-up bowls, use what you have while it's in good condition. When it eventually needs replacing, glass or stainless steel can be a durable alternative.
  • Swap sooner where it matters: Badly damaged non-stick coatings and heavily worn food-contact plastics are higher priorities for replacement. You may also choose to reduce strongly fragranced sprays, air fresheners and similar products if you're trying to cut unnecessary indoor emissions.
