Quick answer

For bed linen, we’d prioritise 100% cotton or linen over synthetic blends. Organic certification such as GOTS is a useful extra, but you don’t need to spend a fortune: good-quality 100% cotton or linen can be a perfectly sensible choice.

What’s actually in our bedding?

Bedding sits against our skin for hours every night, so we think it’s worth looking beyond colour and thread count.

Synthetic fabrics such as polyester are plastic-based, while textiles can also be treated with dyes and chemical finishes to make them crease-resistant, shrink-resistant or easier to care for. Some traditional finishing processes use formaldehyde-based resins, which can irritate the skin and respiratory tract.

There’s no need to panic or replace perfectly good bedding. But when buying new, we prefer simple 100% cotton or linen, with credible certification where possible.

Why are we concerned about synthetic fibres?

Polyester can release tiny microplastic fibres during use and washing. Scientists are still working out what everyday exposure means for our health, but laboratory research using human airway cells has found that inhalable polyester microfibres can interfere with normal airway development.

That doesn’t show that polyester bedding causes illness, but it adds to the case for reducing unnecessary exposure to synthetic fibres where it’s easy to do so.

What should you look for?

We favour simple 100% cotton or linen, but certifications can give you extra reassurance about what happens beyond the fibre itself.

GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) is the one we particularly like for organic bedding. It covers the organic fibres as well as processing, dyes and finishes, with environmental and social requirements throughout production.

OEKO-TEX Standard 100 is different. It tests the finished textile for more than 1,000 potentially harmful substances. Bed linen falls into its direct-skin-contact category, which has stricter testing requirements.

Neither label is essential for good bedding, but both give us useful information that you won’t get from a simple “100% cotton” label.

Cotton or linen?

Both are good choices, so this mostly comes down to how you like your bedding to feel.

Cotton is soft, breathable and easy to care for. Percale has a cooler, crisper feel, while sateen is smoother and silkier. Organic cotton with GOTS certification is our preference where the price makes sense.

Linen is breathable, durable and particularly good if you tend to sleep warm. It starts with a more textured, relaxed feel but becomes softer with washing and use.

Don’t get too distracted by huge thread counts. The quality of the fibre and weave can matter more than simply choosing the biggest number on the packet.
